BLOODY AXE WOUND is a new Horror Comedy Slasher that works amazingly well. The characters we meet are people actually living (and dying) in a slasher movie world. Read our full Bloody Axe Wound movie review here!
BLOODY AXE WOUND is a Horror Comedy made as a Slasher movie. As in the world presented as real is something straight out of a slasher movie. Young people are dying every week and the slasher is the Bladecut patriarch who runs a video store. Yes, as in VHS.
The runtime is just over 80 minutes and that’s perfect for this kind of movie. It’s full of practical effects, pop culture references of the horror variety, and a wonderful cast. Everything is very tongue-in-cheek dark humor. I may never watch it again, but I’m hoping for a sequel.

Can a girl become a slasher?!
If there’s one thing that horror comedy is often excellent at, it’s doing politically incorrect the right way. Shining a spotlight straight at someone saying the very un-PC thing and just having fun with them being a morron. A well-meaning morron, but still a morron.
That’s what Bloody Axe Wound also excels at.
Like when Abbie Bladecut wants to follow in her father’s, The Slasher, footsteps and become the next slasher. He says she can’t, and she asks if it’s because she’s adopted, to which he almost responds with a scoff before saying “No, it’s because you’re a girl!”
A perfectly delivered line by Billy Burke who is nearly completely unrecognizable as Roger Bladecut. A slasher who has been resurrected so many times that his body is now virtually falling apart.
We’re in the small town of Clover Falls, where Roger Bladecut is an iconic producer of slasher films. He actually kills teens and captures these real-life killings on tape to then sell to eager customers. That’s the “official” family business – a VHS rental store.
Abbie Bladecut (played equally wonderfully by Sari Arambulo) has waited her entire life to take over the family business as a slasher – and producer of new VHS rentals. However, she’s about to find out it may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Not all kills are created equal
To prepare for her career as the new slasher, Abbie starts going to High School. The victims of the slasher in Bloody Axe Wound are somehow magically circled in the High School yearbook. You don’t choose your own victims, you go by the book. Literally.
Unfortunately, this also means Abbie gets to know the people she’s about to kill. This turns out to be a very bad idea. While she had no problem killing unknown teens, these people are now becoming her friends and those kills are not easy.
In fact, as she falls for one of her victims, it becomes downright impossible.
And that’s all you need to know because the rest has to be experienced firsthand. As a little teaser, I can tell you that there’s also a Psycho-inspired grandma involved and a wonderful Friday the 13th-type setting in the form of a popular campsite in town.
The entire cast of Bloody Axe Wound is just awesome. You may want to keep an extra eye on the band girl, Sam Crane, portrayed by Molly Brown. Both because she’s a great character and because she portrays the young Debra Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin.
Watch Bloody Axe Wound on VOD now – and Shudder later!
Bloody Axe Wound is written and directed by Matthew John Lawrence. He previously wrote and directed the 2020 horror-comedy punk music movie Uncle Peckerhead which I need to find. Clearly, Matthew John Lawrence is making movies to my liking.
The film was released in US theaters on December 27, 2024, and I would’ve loved to watch it on the big screen with a horror-comedy-loving audience. Not least the opening scene with Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a competing slasher with the awesome name “Butch Slater”.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also a producer alongside his wife Hilarie Burton Morgan, and Mary Stuart Masterson. I’m afraid I don’t know how or why these people got involved with this gorgeous slasher, but I hope they’re up for doing it again. I am really hoping for a sequel.
Bloody Axe Wound is out on VOD on January 14, 2025, and will be available on Shudder later in March.
