BILLIONAIRES’ BUNKER is a new Netflix series from Spain (org. title: El refugio atómico). It’s a genre-hybrid with thriller, sci-fi, mystery, romance, crime, and drama as the official genres. So, yeah, everything but the proverbial kitchen sink.

With eight hour-long episodes, there is plenty of time to cover various storylines and follow the many characters in the series. It does feel a bit soapy at times, but on the other hand, it’s almost kitsch entertainment, so it works.

It’s the end of the world as they know it

At its core, Billionaires’ Bunker is about just that: A bunker made for billionaires to seek refuge when the apocalypse hits. For this Netflix series, the apocalyptic event happens in episode one.

In this pilot episode, you will also discover a lot more about what’s going on in the world. Well, to a point, anyway. There are still many episodes to go.

The bunker is a stylish setting, where the billionaires wear blue outfits while those working in the bunker wear an orange version. In many ways, this is not what these wealthy clients were hoping for.

However, seeing as it’s the end of the world, they make do with a “subpar” service. The kind that includes a buffet and having to clean up after yourself. I mean, they loathe it, but they begrudgingly accept their circumstances.

Billionaires' Bunker – Review | Netflix Thriller Series

Silo meets Paradise set in Spain

To me, Billionaires’ Bunker immediately reminded me of both the Apple TV+ series Silo and the Hulu & Disney+ series Paradise. Both are series that have people hiding in underground bunkers of two very different kinds.

Also, this one is set in Spain and features lots of familiar faces if you’ve watched a few Spanish Netflix productions over the years. The residents seeking shelter in this luxurious bunker are played by an amazing cast.

This includes Miren Ibarguren (Phenomena), Joaquín Furriel (Rest in Peace), Carlos Santos (1992), Montse Guallar, and Álex Villazán (Alma), among others.

Watch season 1 of Billionaires’ Bunker on Netflix now

Billionaires’ Bunker on Netflix is a series created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato. They have already created hits for Netflix, and this one could easily be the next. I mean, the ending certainly leaves room for season 2.

Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato previously worked on the Netflix series Money Heist (org. title: La casa de papel) and Sky Rojo.

The series is directed by Jesús Colmenar, David Barrocal, and Jose Manuel Cravioto (Diablero). The script is written by Álex Pina, Esther Martínez Lobato, David Barrocal, David Oliva, Lorena G. Maldonado, and Humberto Ortega.

The eight episodes of Billionaires’ Bunker (org. title: El refugio atómico) deliver a lot of storylines, but the final scene indicates that more is already on the way.

Billionaires’ Bunker is on Netflix globally on September 19, 2025.

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
