A cold case is never closed

A case may be inactive and described as a “cold case” when no more clues can be followed. However, as this Hulu Original docuseries shows, a cold case is never closed.

In the case of Melissa Witt’s murder, it was reopened three decades later.

We’re on the sidelines of the gripping investigation as detectives reopen the cold case of Melissa Witt’s murder. Now, three decades later, they’re pursuing new leads that may aid in finally bringing her killer to justice.

The murder of Melissa “Missy” Witt

Melissa Witt, 19, went missing on December 1, 1994, when she left her car in a bowling alley parking lot. She headed to the bowling alley to play with her mom in a Church League but never made it across the parking lot to the building.

Six weeks later, the missing case became a murder case. Melissa Witt’s body was found on January 13, 1995, by two hunters in the Ozark National Forest in Franklin County.

She was left without any identifiers on or with her as the killer took her clothes, shoes, and jewelry, after strangling her.

This new Hulu Original is an ABC News Studios docuseries executively produced by Ridley Scott. The observant viewer will no doubt also notice the movie poster for Ridley Scott’s 1991 hit movie Thelma & Louise in a few shots.

To me, this docuseries works because it focuses on the victim, and getting justice for her and her loved ones. Melissa “Missy” Witt was a well-liked teen who wanted to surprise her mom at the bowling alley, but never made it inside the Bowling World building.

On the sidelines of the investigation, we get exclusive interviews with local detectives, FBI agents, and the district attorney’s office. All of them are working together to solve the case. And also right a few wrongs.

For one, the police continuously referred to her as Melissa though she used “Missy”. Fortunately, a local news reporter did not. The fact that she called her Missy in their segments led to a key piece of evidence being discovered.

With At Witt’s End, we come across a few potential suspects, so you’ll get the chance to try and guess along as evidence and clues are examined further.

At Witt’s End: The Hunt for a Killer debuted on Hulu on August 6, 2024.

Plot

A gripping investigation as detectives reopen the cold case of Melissa Witt’s murder. Over three decades later, they pursue new leads to uncover the truth and bring her killer to justice.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
