AMERICAN MANHUNT: O.J. SIMPSON is a new Netflix docuseries about a True Crime case. This particular case has been covered extensively – including in real-time when it happened. As such, it’s a case we may think we know well, but do we really?!
This docuseries has four episodes and before we’re halfway through the first episode, I already heard several details that were new to me. Admittedly, I’m no expert on the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, but I have watched a lot of both documentaries and fictional accounts of the true crime case.

30 years later… and wiser?
In American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson, we’re getting a four-episode docuseries that focuses on the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. This will lead to the trial that dominated the news in the mid-1990s, but before we get that far, the focus is on the crime scene.
Not least the mistakes made right from the beginning. It’s been 30 years and we’re hearing new and very candid interviews with many key individuals. Are they any wiser? Or do they all still point fingers and shift blame?! Well, it’s a mixed bag, I’d say.
And this makes sense because people were so deeply involved with various aspects of the case. From O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden to the infamous L.A. police detective Mark Fuhrman, there are plenty of things said that should hit hard.
Also, it is intriguing to hear O.J. Simpson’s defense attorney, Carl Douglas, talk about justice “meaning different things to different people.” Finally, key witness Kato Kaelin is back in the spotlight and very calmly reflects on the wild experience.
I thought I knew most of the key elements of this case, but I clearly did not. Or, at the very least, there are things that we [the public] were never privy to. Like physical evidence and witnesses that were never part of the trial.

Not a one-sided coverage
Again, I am no expert on this case, so I was pleased to see key people being interviewed for American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson. This means many first-hand accounts – not just from those focused on O.J. Simpson. We also get to hear from Ronald Goldman’s sister, Kim Goldman.
Her explanation for participating in this Netflix true crime documentary series is heartbreaking. It also hits the proverbial nail on the head: If she isn’t part of the story, then neither is her brother. He becomes a footnote despite being one of the murder victims. It would (yet again) be all about O.J. Simpson.
And yes, obviously this is mostly about him. After all, the docuseries is named after him.
However, there is a focus and respect for the murder victims. Not least thanks to her involvement. Also, we hear from those who knew O.J. Simpson very well, but also knew Nicole, and felt that he wasn’t being honest about his role in the murders.

This is the second American Manhunt installment from director Floyd Russ, who also gave us the Netflix production American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing. Also, Floyd Russ directed Untold: Malice at the Palace (2021) which is an episode of the true crime documentary anthology Untold.
While American Manhunt: OJ Simpson succeeds at giving a very informative rundown of the double murder case, there are people we don’t hear from. Some key individuals are no longer alive. This includes Johnnie Cochran and Robert Kardashian who were both part of O.J. Simpson’s defence team.
Also, while we see Prosecutor Marcia Clark and members of the Brown family in archival footage, they decided not to participate. They all wished to move on and not revisit this trauma, while Ronald Goldman’s sister wished to participate to ensure that her brother wasn’t simply a footnote.
Both decisions are understandable, and the wishes of any victim’s loved ones should always be acknowledged and respected. This doesn’t always happen, but it did for this production, and I commend that.
The American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson docuseries is on Netflix from January 29, 2025.
