900 Days of Torment

In 900 Days Without Anabel, we go through the entire case of one of the most infamous kidnapping cases in Spain. On April 12, 1993, Anabel Segura disappeared while out jogging in the area near her home. A very wealthy area, so kidnapping was immediately expected.

And it was confirmed when the kidnappers finally reached out. No one could have anticipated how long it would drag out or how it would end. For almost three years, the entire country of Spain was left hanging in suspense as they waited for good news about the fate of Anabel Segura.

In 900 Days without Anabel, we hear the actual original tapes recorded by police agents as negotiations with the kidnappers happened. Also, we hear new interviews with the police investigators who worked the case.

All of them are clearly still marked by the case!

900 Days Without Anabel – Review | Netflix True Crime Docuseries

The true story of the Anabel Segura kidnapping *spoilers*

As with any kidnapping or disappearance, the family of Anabel Segura endured days, weeks, months, and even years of torment as they awaited a resolution to the kidnapping case. Always trying to hang on to hope.

Seeing another woman released after more than 500 days with her kidnappers helped keep hope alive. Still, they never had any idea how it would end. After 900 days, they would finally get definitive answers about the fate of Anabel Segura.

As with any true crime production, we know how it will end. A quick Google search will tell you the highlights, so we’ve included them below. Avoid if you want to watch the docuseries spoiler-free.

*900 Days without Anabel spoilers below*

The case of Anabel Segura turned out to be a murder case rather than a kidnapping case. Sure, the kidnappers did grab Anabel off of the street while she was out jogging. However, they never had her for 900 days.

Instead, they murdered her after having her captured for just six and a half hours. After being grabbed, Anabel Segura managed to escape, but they caught her. The two kidnappers hadn’t planned much. In fact, they didn’t even know where they would keep her while she was their victim.

So, having already gotten her name and the phone number of her family, they decided to kill her. After just 6½ hours. Mostly because they didn’t know what else to do. Many days later, when the family demanded proof of life, the wife of one of the kidnappers pretended to be Anabel.

Sadly, the brutal and tragic truth was that Anabel Segura was already buried. 900 days later her remains were uncovered. This happened after the kidnappers had been arrested and “helped” the police to where they had buried her remains.

The director and co-writer of this docuseries is Mónica Palomero. She’s a journalist who has specialized in investigation and social denunciation. Previously, she’s been a director and scriptwriter of the renowned reporting program Fuera de Cobertura and the docuseries Malaya: Secret operation.

The 900 distressing days that Anabel’s kidnapping lasted left Spain in suspense. People took to the streets and huge marches to ask for her release. Between 1993 and 1995, only fourteen phone calls took place between the kidnappers and the negotiator representing the Segura family.

Waiting for a phone call was excruciating, but the family (and police) had no choice but to wait. They had no other clues. Now, we get to hear those conversations in their entirety for the first time. Almost thirty years after the resolution of the case.

A case that (understandably!) shocked Spain.

900 Days Without Anabel premieres on Netflix on November 22, 2024.

Plot

Anabel Segura’s abduction held Spain in suspense for 900 days. This docuseries explores the case through never-before-heard recordings of the kidnappers.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
