1992 is a new Netflix thriller miniseries with a serial killer and a huge mystery. The mystery involves a crime that has some link to the ’92 Expo in Sevilla, Spain. We need to figure out who the killer is, and what the motive for these brutal murders by fire is.
Or rather, we don’t have to do anything except allow ourselves to be entertained. A few people take it upon themselves to investigate the murders when the police keep insisting that the deaths are accidents. Well, in the beginning anyway. We’ve watched all six episodes for this review.

It all began at the ’92 Expo in Sevilla, Spain
This new Netflix thriller series revolves around a series of murders that have an identical weapon: Each of the victims is burned to death. In their hand, something has been left behind, unscathed by fire. It’s a small keychain-sized Curro doll. Curro was the iconic mascot of Sevilla’s Expo ’92.
SEVILLE OR SEVILLA?
The name of the town is Sevilla in Spanish, but was changed to Seville in English. However, in recent time, the original Spanish name for this city in Spain has gained traction in English as well. Right now, it feels only right to use this original name in respect of the recent flooding disaster in the area.
Unfortunately, collateral damage happens, when dealing with fire, so several additional victims – meaning people not left with a Curro in their hand – die as well. One of them is the husband of Amparo (Marian Alvárez).
Of course, no one even believes that it was anything but an accident as this is the first murder. However, Amparo saw a Curro doll at the crime scene, because she showed up right after the explosion happened.
The Curro melted before anyone else could see it, so it’s written off as a hallucination.
An alcoholic ex-cop to the rescue
Fortunately, someone is ready to listen. His name is Richi (Fernando Valdivielso) and he may not be in the best place in life. He’s a security guard because he was fired as a cop due to being a raging alcoholic.
Unfortunately, he’s still an alcoholic, which makes him less reliable, but he knew Amparo’s late husband and wants to help.
While he has friends in many important places and should be the key to solving this mystery, it turns out Amparo is very capable as well. Mostly, because she has nothing to lose. Her son is safe and sound in Canada, so she spends all her time working on finding out who is responsible.
Overall, the police are not ready to help much, but there are exceptions.
It gets better once more people start dying in violent fires. All of them are connected to the 1992 Expo in Sevilla. And, again, the object left behind was the ’92 Expo mascot Curro.
The killer isn’t shy about letting the world (and the remaining victim on the list) know that their time is almost up. Also, the intended victims were all part of a small group in charge of preparing the Expo in 1992. Again, this means the police could be one step ahead.
Well, in theory, anyway.
The cast of 2024 Netflix series 1992
In the two key roles of the widow, Amparo, and the ex-cop, Richi, we have two actors who work perfectly together. Marian Álvarez and Fernando Valdivielso respectively.
Marian Álvarez (When Angels Sleep) is Amparo and she is fierce and an actual force of nature in this role. You’d want her working on your case. She is relentless and whip-smart.
Fernando Valdivielso (The Barrier, Toy Boy) is like a Spanish Ron Perlman. He just has this face where I kept thinking of Ron Perlman while also thinking he looked very Spanish – the latter even becomes a joke later in the series. Having a case he cares about and someone (Amparo) who calls him out, is just what he needs.
About halfway through the series, we’re introduced to Carmen. She’s portrayed by Paz Vega (Kaleidoscope). While I loved the duo of Amparo and Richi, it turns out I also adore it when Amparo teams up with Carmen.
And when all three work together, it’s a winning combination. One that should result in more seasons. This is a miniseries, but if it’s a success I’m sure Netflix will find a way. The series is even left open-ended enough that this is possible.
In other supporting roles, we see quite a few familiar faces. These include Gorka Lasaosa (Narcos: México), Jaime Ordóñez (The Bar, 30 Coins), Carlos Santos (The Chalk Line), and Mona Martínez.
Watch the 1992 miniseries on Netflix
The new Netflix series 1992 comes from creator and screenwriter Jorge Guerricaechevarría, who is a two-time Goya Award winner (for Cell 211 and The Laws of the Border).
Horror movie fans will probably know him for writing Sister Death and El bar. Or the genre movies The Warning and Eye for an Eye.
The director on all six episodes of the 1992 series (and also co-creator) is Álex de la Iglesia, who is a very frequent collaborator of Jorge Guerricaechevarría. Scriptwriters on the episodes also include Pablo Tébar (Diablero) and Jorge Valdano (The Barrier).
If you want to spend your Friday the 13th of December 2024 binge-watching this new Netflix series, it wouldn’t be a bad choice. It’s not a horror series, but the multiple murders by fire are more brutal than many horror movies. Especially as they are well-made and we see it all happen.
1992 is out on Netflix globally from December 13, 2024.
