August 2026 is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s strongest genre months of the year. Between sci-fi horror, psychological thrillers, Scandinavian crime dramas, supernatural mysteries, and one very welcome killer doll marathon, the late-summer lineup is packed with titles that should be on every horror and thriller fan’s radar.
We’re especially excited about four releases. The Last House looks like a major sci-fi horror event from director Louis Leterrier, Blood Sacrifice brings a dark Swedish detective story with serious Nordic noir potential, The Whisper Man boasts a phenomenal cast led by Robert De Niro, and the Danish psychological thriller The Secret Woman sounds tailor-made for fans of twist-heavy mystery dramas.
Here’s everything horror, thriller, sci-fi, and true crime fans should add to their watchlists in August 2026.
August 1, 2026
Anaconda (1997)
The gloriously over-the-top creature feature returns. Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight battle a legendary giant snake deep in the Amazon, and somehow this movie remains exactly as entertainingly bonkers as ever.
Chucky Movie Collection
Netflix is dropping a generous selection of Chucky movies, including:
- Child’s Play 2 (1990)
- Child’s Play 3 (1991)
- Bride of Chucky (1998)
- Seed of Chucky (2004)
- Curse of Chucky (2013)
- Cult of Chucky (2017)
That’s basically a summer-long Chucky marathon waiting to happen.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Jake Gyllenhaal delivers one of his career-best performances as a morally bankrupt freelance crime journalist willing to do absolutely anything for the perfect shot.
Still deeply unsettling.
Elysium (2013)
Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi thriller imagines a future divided between the wealthy elite living in a luxurious space habitat and everyone else struggling on an overpopulated Earth.
August 3, 2026
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2025)
The animatronic nightmare continues as long-buried secrets about Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza begin to surface. Expect more creepy mascots, supernatural chaos, and jump-scare-fueled mayhem.
Asphalt City (2024)
Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan star in this gritty psychological thriller about paramedics working New York City’s brutal night shift, where constant trauma begins to erode the line between survival and sanity.
The Last House (2026)
This is one of our most anticipated Netflix movies of the entire month.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, The Last House blends survival thriller, sci-fi, and horror into what sounds like a claustrophobic late-summer nightmare. Starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, the film centers on a terrifying survival scenario with strong genre-bending ambitions.
With its combination of sci-fi horror elements, survival tension, and blockbuster scale, The Last House has the potential to become one of Netflix’s biggest original horror releases of 2026.
August 9, 2026
Lazareth (2024)
Ashley Judd stars in this post-apocalyptic thriller about a woman raising two orphaned girls in complete isolation after a global pandemic. When a wounded stranger enters their world, everything begins to unravel.
August 13, 2026
A Child of My Own (2026)
This intimate docudrama explores grief, societal pressure, and deception as a woman fabricates a pregnancy after multiple miscarriages.
Immaculate (2024)
Sydney Sweeney stars in this stylish psychological horror film set inside a remote Italian convent where a seemingly miraculous pregnancy leads to increasingly disturbing revelations.
Beautifully shot and deeply unsettling.
August 15, 2026
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
David Fincher’s masterful adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel remains one of the finest modern mystery thrillers ever made. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are phenomenal.
The Shallows (2016)
Blake Lively versus a great white shark.
Simple premise. Maximum tension.
August 20, 2026
Blood Sacrifice (2026) – Limited Series
A brutal double murder forces a detective to work alongside his estranged ex-cop father in this promising Swedish crime thriller.
Everything about Blood Sacrifice screams Nordic noir: fractured family relationships, relentless investigations, and dark Scandinavian atmosphere. Swedish crime dramas rarely disappoint, and this one has all the ingredients for a gripping binge-watch.
We’re expecting this to be one of the month’s strongest international releases.
To Catch a Cheater (2026)
A seemingly harmless game spirals into paranoia, betrayal, and deadly consequences in this Lifetime mystery thriller.
August 23, 2026
Talamasca: The Secret Order (Season 1)
Set in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe, this supernatural spy thriller follows a telepathic lawyer recruited into a secret organization that monitors vampires, witches, and other supernatural forces.
An intriguing expansion of Rice’s gothic world.
July 22, 2026
Elize: Shadows of a Woman (2026)
In this retelling of a real case, a former escort discovers her wealthy husband’s infidelity and struggles to cope as betrayal poisons their marriage.
August 24, 2026
M3GAN (2022)
The AI doll that launched a thousand memes returns to Netflix. Equal parts horror, comedy, and cautionary tech tale, M3GAN remains enormously entertaining.
Revival: Season 1
The dead return in rural Wisconsin, but they’re not zombies. They look and behave exactly as they did before dying, creating a fascinating supernatural mystery with strong horror-noir vibes.
August 28, 2026
The Secret Woman (2026)
This Danish psychological thriller immediately grabbed our attention.
After discovering she has a wealthy family and a powerful shipping empire, a woman suffering from amnesia returns to a seemingly perfect life to uncover why she disappeared in the first place.
Identity mysteries, unreliable memories, family secrets, and psychological suspense make The Secret Woman sound exactly like the kind of dark Scandinavian thriller that tends to become an international streaming hit.
Mousetrap: Season 1 (2026)
A writer discovers his identity has been stolen and is forced into an uneasy alliance with a ruthless loan shark to reclaim his life from a mysterious criminal known as “The Rat.”
The Whisper Man (2026)
Another major highlight.
Produced by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO banner, The Whisper Man stars Robert De Niro and Adam Scott in a crime thriller about a father searching for his missing son. The investigation forces him to seek help from his estranged father, a retired detective connected to the serial killer now haunting the case.
With its stellar cast, emotionally charged premise, and serial killer mystery, The Whisper Man has serious prestige-thriller potential.
August 2026 is an exceptionally strong month for horror and thriller fans. Between the blockbuster ambitions of The Last House, the Scandinavian darkness of Blood Sacrifice and The Secret Woman, and the star power behind The Whisper Man, Netflix is delivering a lineup that feels both commercially exciting and genuinely intriguing.
Add in Chucky, M3GAN, Fincher, sharks, vampires, and supernatural conspiracies, and August might end up being one of the year’s most bingeable months.
