For many horror fans, Curry Barker’s OBSESSION is the biggest horror surprise of the year. However, we can’t exactly claim that’s the case here at Heaven of Horror.

We had it listed on our “Horror Movies 2026” feature from December 2025. This is our list of the upcoming movies for the next year. Or put more plainly, our list of the most “Terrifying New Releases You Don’t Want to Miss”.

But why were our expectations for OBSESSION already sky-high?

Because we’d seen Curry Barker’s first feature film, Milk & Serial, and we absolutely loved it.

The horror-comedy MILK & SERIAL is available to watch completely free on Curry Barker and Cooper Tomlinson’s YouTube channel, that’s a bad idea, where they’ve spent years creating an impressive collection of short films.

Their shorts, and this first feature, are usually driven by comedy first and foremost. Still, it’s incredibly rare for their work not to also feature a dark and unsettling undercurrent.

That particular combination of comedy as the primary storytelling tool is something we also recognize from another filmmaker. Someone who also took the horror world by storm: Jordan Peele.

The “Surprise Hits” Horror Fans Saw Coming

We went through something very similar with GET OUT, which managed to catch a special preview screening of the day before its official wide release.

I mention this because it’s a key element that we watched the movie with an actual audience of horror fans. As opposed to film critics who watched it at a press screening, they were sent to!

While our expectations for Get Out were already pretty crazy, the movie more than lived up to our expectations. We awarded GET OUT a perfect score here on our website. More importantly, we immediately knew – from our own reaction as well as the atmosphere in the theater – that this would be a massive hit.

Along with many other horror fans and genre media, we spotted this “surprise hit” way ahead of time. And we recognized that Jordan Peele had that perfect eye for delicious horror that we all crave.

Is Horror Finally Becoming Respectable?

Perhaps attitudes have shifted as horror has gained wider recognition. And the fact that Jordan Peele won an Oscar for the screenplay to GET OUT certainly didn’t hurt.

More recently, SINNERS received a record-breaking number of Oscar nominations and went on to win many of them, making it increasingly difficult to ignore horror movies if you’re serious about covering film as a medium.

Now, OBSESSION didn’t manage to reach GET OUT levels for us. However, we have no doubt that Curry Barker will eventually get there with one of his future projects. Maybe it’ll be his very next movie that earns a full house of 5 out of 5 blood splats from us?!

For now, all he needs to do is stay on this awesome path to avoid disappointing us. Fortunately, OBSESSION is a solid indication that he won’t do that any time soon.
