Okay, let’s get to that Speak No Evil ending and the many differences between the original Danish horror movie and the new American remake.

Are the two Speak No Evil movie endings identical?

No! Actually, the last third of the remake is totally different from the original Danish movie. In the original movie, the Danish parents are brutally stoned to death and their daughter’s tongue is cut off.

I guess the American audience prefers to let the good guys win. So in the Speak No Evil remake the parents fight back and kill the bad guys. Also, they drive away with the kidnapped boy safely in the backseat.

What does the writing on the back of the watch say?

When the boy Ant shows the watch in the drawer to the girl Agnes, she doesn’t understand the writing on the back that he wants her to read.

That’s because it’s in Danish. The boy is taken from a Danish family, and the watch is his father’s. The writing on the back says something like “Happy 40th birthday.”

What does the handwritten note from Ant to Agnes say?

When Ant tries to write a note to Agnes, it’s also in Danish. The message on the note is essentially, “Please help me escape. This place is not safe.”

Speak No Evil Remake Ending & FAQ

Was Ciara originally one of the kidnapped children?

Well, Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) says she has been with Paddy (James McAvoy) since she was a child. And previously she says that she and Paddy have been together for 17 years.

The math of that puzzles Louise (Mackenzie Davis) because Ciara is so young. But it makes sense if she was the original victim and has been trained by him since childhood.

When Chiara is killed, Paddy suggests that Agnes will be the new “Ciara” and that she will be the one taking care of him.

Is the original Speak No Evil ending better?

Well, the ending of the original Danish Speak No Evil is certainly more definitive and much more cruel. The bad guys win and yet another child is kidnapped and trapped with them until a new family becomes their next victim.

However, for a second, I thought this 2024 Speak No Evil remake would somehow manage to be even more cruel. Knowing that the director James Watkins previously made Eden Lake (2008), I recognized that anything could happen.

So, I actually felt my stomach drop when Paddy had Ben and Louise at gunpoint with their daughter, Agnes, in his grip. As he says that Agnes will take the place of Ciara, who lies dead on the ground, I thought to myself that James Watkins was brilliant.

I figured he would tell the parents that their daughter would be his new partner-in-crime, raised to be his wife, and then he would kill them point blank.

Of course, this didn’t happen as the daughter fought back and was aided by her mother especially. Still, had James Watkins gone all the way with what was insinuated by Paddy, it would have been a crueler and maybe even better ending.

Which of the Speak No Evil movies is scarier?

To me, the original Danish version of Speak No Evil is a straight-up horror drama, and, as such, it is definitively the most scary of the two.

The 2024 US remake of Speak No Evil is ultimately a survival story with more action. In fact, it’s even a revenge story as the boy, Ant, is the one who kills Paddy. The man who murdered his parents then cut off his tongue and held him kidnapped.

Which one you prefer is another question entirely. I know some people found the original to be too slow and dark as there is no hope, redemption, or revenge. I was entertained by both.

Still, I was terrified by the Danish version, yet not the American remake.

Other fun facts about the Speak No Evil remake

This is just a little fun fact about some of the actors from Speak No Evil. Two of the leading stars, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy, know each other well from when they co-starred in the amazing AMC series Halt and Catch Fire (2014-2017).

I usually keep up-to-date with all the horror news, and make sure Heaven of Horror share the best and latest trailers for upcoming horror movies. I love all kinds of horror. My love affair started when I watched 'Poltergeist' alone around the age of 10. I slept like a baby that night and I haven't stopped watching horror movies since. The crazy slasher stuff isn't really for me, but hey, to each their own. I guess I just like to be scared and get jump scares, more than being disgusted and laughing at the grotesque. Also, Korean and Spanish horror movies made within the past 10-15 years are among my absolute favorites.
