Netflix’s YOU has finally reached its chilling conclusion. With five seasons of obsession, murder, and internal monologues in the vein of Dexter, Joe Goldberg has cemented his place in TV villain history. But how many of these details and fun facts are you aware of?
The YOU Finale is here, and we’re looking back at all five seasons of You. How many people did he actually kill? Who survived him? And did justice ever catch up?
Here’s a You finale breakdown of the final stats and fun facts from this binge-worthy psychological thriller series.
How Many People Did Joe Kill?
Joe’s final body count sits at 23 confirmed victims, spanning toxic exes, nosy neighbors, romantic rivals, and even close friends. Whether in the name of love or self-preservation, Joe always had a reason to kill.
Just very rarely a good one.
Who Were His First and Last Victims?
Season 1 kicked off with Benji, who had it coming (in Joe’s mind), and was also the first victim we see trapped in Joe’s cage.
Fast-forward to Season 5, and Joe’s final “victim” is – almost symbolic – one of the police officers chasing after him. Just minutes later, he is finally caught by the police after Bronte holds him in place at gunpoint.
For the record, the very first murder victim of Joe Goldberg was his mom’s boyfriend, who died at the hands of Joe many years earlier.
Which Season of YOU Had the Most Deaths?
YOU hit peak murder numbers in Season 4, set in London, where Joe reinvented himself as “Jonathan Moore.” He chalked up eight kills in this single season alone. Of course, he also became the serial killer known as the “Eat the Rich Killer”.
Apparently, studying literature and hiding in plain sight while killing (mostly) rich people is murderously effective.
Did Joe Ever Regret His Crimes?
That’s debatable, but largely no.
Joe often reflected on his actions, but his internal justifications were constant. While he sometimes claimed remorse, his pattern of repeated violence tells a different story.
He even says that he has never killed anyone “innocent”. Of course, in the mind of Joe Goldberg, anyone who crosses him og gets in his way is guilty.
In the Season 5 You finale, he kills a police officer doing his job. He could’ve knocked him out, but murder is just so easy for Joe.
How many names has Joe Goldberg used?
Joe has used 6 aliases or identities over the five seasons of You.
From a bookstore manager, Joe Goldberg, in New York to a Literature Professor, Jonathan Moore, in London. Each reinvention was more desperate, showing just how far he’d go to outrun his past– and preferably also himself.
Another one of the names used by Joe was Will Bettelheim, who is the name of the man helping Joe Goldberg create yet another false identity in season 5.
Will Bettelheim is now in Manila, but was held in Joe’s glass cage earlier (season 2). He is one of the few people who got away and now helps Joe.
See, Joe Goldberg can gaslight men as well as women. Just with different purposes in mind.
Fun Fact: His Victims Were Often People He Loved
Of the 23 people he killed, nine were friends, lovers, or close acquaintances. If you got emotionally close to Joe, your chances of making it out alive weren’t great.
Romance was always a little… fatal.

Was Justice Finally Served in the YOU Finale?
In the sense that Joe Goldberg is a serial killer who is convicted of murder, yes, justice is served in the You finale.
However, there are still many unanswered questions, and Joe will continue to see himself as the victim. In that sense, he manages to gaslight even himself.
The ending of the Netflix series You leaves things morally satisfying for the most part. Not completely legal, perhaps, but Joe is finally forced to pay for (at least some) of his crimes.
When Joe is exposed, the narrative makes it clear that he is not the misunderstood romantic anti-hero he imagined. He is a stone-cold killer and an extremely dangerous narcissist.
What to watch on Netflix now that YOU has ended?!
If you’re just wrapping up YOU, this is the perfect time to revisit early seasons and spot all the red flags you missed. While Joe Goldberg is a charmer, he is also a master manipulator and gaslighting expert. Even more than he realizes himself.
However, if you’re ready to move on from Joe, and you’re still hungry for more thrillers with serial killers, then check out Mindhunter, The Snow Girl, The Gardener, or the new The Glass Dome (all on Netflix). Also, there are several Dexter series now (just not on Netflix).
Just maybe don’t root for the killer this time.
Well, okay, Dexter Morgan does have a code that means he literally goes after the Joe Goldbergs of the world. So, maybe still root for him!
