Q&A about the Fanboy serial killer in Season 1 of Cross

First things first, Cross season 1 was all about the Fanboy serial killer, so let’s start with questions about him.

Who was the real serial killer?

This one was revealed early on as we followed the Fanboy serial killer as the police chased after him. Ed Ramsey was his real name. He was a rich and powerful man, who had dirt on everyone.

Or rather, he had the power to give people what they wanted. Sometimes they wanted to get away with something bad and he would keep their secret. Other times, he could help make their wishes come true, but this also came at a price.

Usually, one that would result in Ed Ramsey having dirt on them. See how that works?! No matter how anyone’s relationship with Ed Ramsey started, he would later be able to use it to his advantage, By then, people were in too deep to get out.

Why did Fanboy want to make his victims look like serial killers?

Ed Ramsey AKA Fanboy would probably say that it was his artwork. He admired serial killers and wanted to link his own name to theirs.

That’s why he chose people who resembled famous serial killers and changed their appearance to match even better before killing them.

Even their deaths had to match how each serial killer died.

Why did Fanboy need to find his Aileen victim so quickly?

This was due to another one of Ed Ramsey’s artwork rules.

Each victim had to die on the birthday of the serial killer they resembled.

Aileen Wournos‘ birthday was on February 29, which is a leap year day and only comes every fourth year (each leap year). That’s why there was urgency with the Aileen Wournos victim.

Why did Ed Ramsey / Fanboy kill people?

Killing people wasn’t the end goal for Ed Ramsey. Instead, he wanted to be a famous serial killer.

He admired serial killers himself and wanted to take his own rightful place among them.

As a serial killer, he felt that he was close to being a God.

Why wasn’t Ed Ramsey named as the Fanboy serial killer publicly?

Because this was what he wanted, and if Ed Ramsey was allowed to be famous (or infamous, but this was the same to him), then he would’ve won.

In a final power move, the police refused to acknowledge that Ed Ramsey was the Fanboy serial killer.

Was Ed Ramsey really Fanboy?

Yes, he was really Fanboy though the police tried to make Ed Ramsey believe that he was crazy.

Well, only for a while, because then they revealed that they had his “Book” which featured images of the dead serial killers and Fanboy’s victims made to look like these serial killers.

Then they burned the book to show Ed Ramsey that nobody would ever know that he was Fanboy.

Why was Bobby Trey named as the Fanboy?

He made a deal with the police. A deal that meant very little jail time in return for information on where the bodies of each past victim were.

Because Bobby Trey had worked so closely with Ed Ramsey, he could answer these questions.

Also, Bobby Trey had access to all of Ed Ramsey’s dirty secrets and the FBI wanted these secrets and were ready to pay well for them.

So, Bobby Trey – who had killed at least two people – accepted the terms of little jail time (24 months) as well as immunity in return for information on where the Fanboy victims were buried.

And also, a whole lot of money once he came out of prison.

Questions about who was stalking Alex Cross

The recurring storyline in season 1 revolved around the murder of Alex Cross’ wife Maria. This happens within the first few minutes of the series, and Alex Cross is later stalked by someone, who wants to continue tormenting him.

Who killed Maria?

Peter Lenox killer Maria Cross. We never see him kill her – not in the opening scene nor in any flashback later, but Peter Lenox was the person who killed Alex Cross’ wife Maria.

This was the real ending of Cross Season 1.

Of course, this was also the big mystery we never knew the answer to. Early on, we saw who the Fanboy serial killer was, but we had to wait until the Cross ending, to see who killed Alex Cross’ wife.

Why did Peter Lenox kill Maria?

It had nothing to do with Maria and everything to do with Alex Cross. In fact, Maria was killed only to hurt Alex.

Alex Cross had done a psychological evaluation of Deirdre Nolan as she stood trial for murder. Deirdre Nolan had confessed to murder and Alex stated that she was broken and couldn’t be fixed. This resulted in a harsher prison sentence, and Deirdre Nolan hung herself in prison to escape that hell.

Deirdre Nolan was a foster sister / chosen family of Peter Lenox, and Peter blamed Alex, so he wanted him to pay by taking away his loved one.

Who was stalking Alex Cross?

This was also Peter Lenox, but it appears he had help from his “Street Mom”, who had inserted herself into the Cross family as Damon Cross’ piano teacher.

Who was in the Cross household to leave Maria’s scarf?

This is a bit tricky because it should have been Peter or Miss Nancy. But the person appeared to be rather small-framed. Our guess would have been a younger woman or a teenage boy.

Why did Miss Nancy want to hurt Alex Cross?

Miss Nancy had taken in Deirdre Nolan and Peter Lenox as her own kids, and they referred to her as their “Street Mom” or simply “Mom”. She loved and cared for them, but also made a choice that resulted in Deirdre going to prison.

Peter was the person of interest in the case that Deirdre confessed to.

However, Deirdre only confessed to murder because Miss Nancy, their foster mom, had asked her to please do that to help Peter. Deirdre was a white girl with no record, while Peter was a black man with lots of arrests on his record.

Miss Nancy figured that Deirdre would get away with a short sentence and they could all move on. Then when Alex evaluated her so harshly – especially because she so coldly confessed – things changed.

Did Peter kill Miss Nancy?

One could argue that Peter’s refusal to kill one of Alex’s children to make him hurt like Miss Nancy had, was what led to her death.

But no, Peter was a good man, who had been influenced by Miss Nancy to do some very bad things, and now he refused to continue. He was ready to hurt Alex, as he believed Alex had hurt Deirdre, but would not hurt his kids.

Why did Miss Nancy kill herself?

Miss Nancy took her own life as she couldn’t continue hurting. Something that surely scared Peter more than anything else, as he watched her set fire to herself.

Maybe it was the guilt from seeing Peter realize that his mom, Miss Nancy, was responsible for Deirdre confessing to murder. Sure, it was to save Peter, but it ended up costing Deirdre her life.

What we know about Cross Season 2

Prime Video was betting on the success of Cross from the very beginning, so a second season of Cross has already been greenlit and shot.

Oh yeah, Cross season 2 was shot back-to-back with season 1.

Hopefully, this means we won’t have to wait too long before the second season gets a premiere date on Prime Video.

When will Cross Season 2 come out?

We don’t know the premiere date of Cross Season 2 yet, but when we do, this will be updated to reflect it.

Because the second season has already been shot, we expect (and hope!) that it won’t be too long.

Will Bobby Trey be in the next season?

The season 1 Cross ending did tease that Bobby Trey might play a part in season 2 as well. However, we don’t know anything about the story yet.

Or rather, we don’t know how Bobby Trey might factor into it. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking because Johnny Ray Gill was so amazing in this role.

Still, I’d say they teased it pretty darn heavily in that final scene with him in the season 1 ending.

Who is cast in season 2 of Cross?

We know of three actors, who will be in season 2 of Cross. This was already revealed back in April of 2024 when the early season 2 renewal was announced.

The three new faces are Wes Chatham (Ahsoka, Squealer), Matthew Lillard (Scream, Five Nights at Freddy’s), and Jeanine Mason (The Perfect Couple, Upload).

Jeanine Mason will be playing Rebecca. She’s a brilliant and ambitious judge with a vengeful streak. Matthew Lillard will most likely play Lance. He’s a self-made business tycoon known for being ruthless. Sounds a bit like Ed Ramsey of Season 1, but that isn’t a bad thing.

Finally, Wes Chatham will be playing the character Donnie. He’s a military veteran turned farmer, who seems to be pretty hardcore with far-right political views and a “sensitive” heart. Whatever that means. Could it be medically speaking or are we talking about a far-right softie?!

Time will tell, I suppose, and whatever the case, we’re ready for Cross Season 2.

Cross Season 1 Questions from our readers

Laura contacted us with the following question:

Is the FBI agent Kayla working on her own, when she makes a deal with Bobby Trey, or is everyone in on it?

Everything in regards to the serial killer part of the deal is definitely something everyone is in on. I mean, Alex Cross himself told Ed Ramsey that they were charging Bobby Trey with the Fanboy murders.

When it comes to the deal about getting all of Ed Ramsey’s dirty little secrets? That part is more questionable and feels like an FBI move.

Considering that Kayla is the one to get all the answers needed, she must have leverage. Getting all the dirty secrets Ed Ramsey has accumulated will give her a lot of leverage.

So, the next time Alex Cross and his colleagues need a search warrant quickly or need to get their case prioritized, Kayla can find someone to fix this.

If they refuse to help on their own accord, she can make them by using the leverage she gains with Ed Ramsey’s treasure trove of dirt.

I usually keep up-to-date with all the horror news, and make sure Heaven of Horror share the best and latest trailers for upcoming horror movies. I love all kinds of horror. My love affair started when I watched 'Poltergeist' alone around the age of 10. I slept like a baby that night and I haven't stopped watching horror movies since. The crazy slasher stuff isn't really for me, but hey, to each their own. I guess I just like to be scared and get jump scares, more than being disgusted and laughing at the grotesque. Also, Korean and Spanish horror movies made within the past 10-15 years are among my absolute favorites.
